Overview

A digital platform OGO Dental simplifies the process of requesting and exchanging dental records for both patients and dentists. It allows patients to request dental records from their previous dentist, securely store and share them with a new dentist. Meanwhile, dentists can also use the platform to exchange dental records with their patients. Managing dental records has never been simpler for everyone involved!

Problem

Transferring dental records, including x-rays, from a previous dentist to a new one is a common yet complex process. Typically, this relies on email communication between the patient and the dental office, which poses security risks and lacks efficiency, leading to frustration for both patients and dental professionals.

Solution

Create an online platform which offers a user-friendly interface that empowers patients to easily request their dental records, features secure storage to protect sensitive information, and provides seamless sharing capabilities to facilitate efficient communication between patients and dentists.

Market Research

Primary users:

  • Patients: Individuals seeking an easy way to manage and share their dental history.

  • Dentists: Practitioners needing efficient access to patient records for better treatment planning.

Key Findings:

  • The Digital Dentistry Market size is expected to reach $13.89 billion by 2029, with a significant portion attributed to digital solutions (Mordor Intelligence, 2024).

  • Increasing digitization in healthcare is driving demand for innovative platforms that enhance patient care and operational efficiency (Market.us, 2024).

  • A shift towards more personalized healthcare solutions, emphasizing patient involvement in their own records (Coherent Market Insights, 2024).

Survey

I conducted an online survey with 8 users using Google forms. The study utilizes surveys to collect quantitative data from users (dental patients) who have switched dental offices in the past.

  • 75% said that they encountered difficulties accessing their dental records.

  • 100% responded that security measures important during the process of transferring their dental records.

Interviews

I conducted five 1:1 user interviews (15 minutes each) and three 1:1 stakeholder interviews (10 minutes each).

Main takeaways from interviewing both patients and dentists include the importance of facilitating quick and easy transfer of dental records, ensuring secure transfer of personal health information, and minimizing the need for communication between dental offices and patients.

Pain Points:

  • Time - consuming process and delays

  • Data privacy concerns

  • Need to communicate via emails and phone calls in order to complete the transfer of records

Competitor Analysis

After conducting a thorough competitor analysis, I discovered that indirect Pocket Health is the main competitor of OGO Dental. However, it primarily focuses on serving medical professionals and their patients, leaving a gap in services for dentists and their patients. Other competitors which transfer dental records and images to patients are not universal (attached to a specific dental softwares) and patients still need to request the records by calling or emailing a dental office. Also, non of them available worldwide or in multiple languages.

  • Pocket Health is an online HIPAA/PHIPA compliant platform where both patients and medical providers can exchange the medical records and images. However, this platform is not available for dental professionals. Additionally, unfortunately this platform cannot be used worldwide which is disadvantage for immigrants who would like to have a continuous health care.

  • CDA Secure Send easy to use by sending patients' information to other dental professionals. It is not attached to a dental software and a simple internet connection is sufficient. However, the major drawback is that only Canadian Dental Association members can use this service, while others can only receive information but cannot communicate back. This significantly limits its use, especially for international dentists or dentists from Quebec.

  • The DSN-powered (a dental software) DentChart platform facilitates the effortless transfer of dental records and medical images to other dental professionals and patients. Nonetheless, not all dentists use this software due to reasons such as personal preference or cost. This makes it impossible to have two-way communication with dentists or patients who do not use the software. Only patient’s from the US can register on the platform.

  • Dentrix Ascend is a cloud-based software that allows exchange medical records and images with another dentists. The main disadvantage is that there is no two way-communication with the dentists who do not use this software. Additionally there is no online platform that the patients could use in order to access their dental records and images.

Testing

I used the AI platform Attention Insight to analyze my design and generate attention heatmaps that provide valuable insights into user engagement. I was satisfied with the results as it shows that users do not miss the important information on the website.

Additionally, the clarity score was 76% (optimal clarity is between 60% and 94%), suggesting that the design is clear and that essential elements are easily visible to new users.

Conclusion

Designing OGO Dental has been a rewarding yet challenging journey. One of the most significant difficulties was devising a pricing model that ensures the product's viability while remaining accessible to its target audience. To bring the product into aa real life, multiple professionals would need to work on security requirements, and technical capabilities to make required careful thought and iterations. Despite it, the project was an exciting and fulfilling, it pushed me to think creatively and strategically to bring the initial idea and vision to life. I believe that OGO Dental has the potential to transform how dental records are managed and exchanged in the future.
